Mrityusangeet (Death Song)

One cannot lead a dignified and contented life if one is obsessed with negative emotion all the time. Life has multi-faceted aspects. Positive and negative emotions are part of it. But if one is obsessed with revenge with the sole aim to right the wrong of the past, his faculty of reasoning gets blurred and he becomes a victim of irrationality. He becomes blind to the brighter side of life – milk of human kindness, love for humanity, do-gooder’s effort to enlighten the society.



Baansh Jhaar (Bamboo Bush)

Playwright and direction – Souvik Sen Gupta

Two bank robbers hold up a small town Bank. The manager and the clerk are very delighted to welcome them. The prospect of something ‘exciting’ happening in a small branch of a village is too tempting to resist for them. They welcome the robbers with open arms and ready to ‘extend’ all kinds of help to fulfill their mission. Meanwhile, the younger of the robbers forgets his priority and instead is enamoured by the charm of manager’s young daughter. She, in turn, with tacit approval of her mother, responds favourably.

When it comes to human desire, sky is the limit. The protagonist of the play realizes this the hard way. His latest invention is dream child – made to order baby. He claims that through genetic engineering he can help give birth to a baby which will fulfill all the dreams and aspiration of its parents when it grows up. A young couple arrives at his nursing home with high hope. The prospect of having such a child excites them to no end.

The myth and mystery surrounding ghosts continue to draw our interest. For centuries ghosts have been portrayed as scary, ill-tempered and spiteful. What happens when one encounters a ghost, who, unlike his comrades, has all the qualities of a human, uncomfortable in his airy existence and longs for returning to the physical world?

Whether success and happiness in life can make a man self-contented and prevents him from his quest to find out the ultimate truth? Whether marriage is a self-defeating act in the sense that it causes to lose one’s independence and shower love to many others? Real act of murder and desire to kill are the same? Who knows that the truth lies somewhere in one’s meanness, selfishness, vice and virtue? Or is the truth something intangible and forever unknown?



2012 : Aparajito (Indomitable)

Aritra and Nipa are stuck in a quagmire after their car accidently hit Lakha, a tribal. When they bring the victim and his wife Suromoni to their home to avoid police harassment, the real drama begins. The situation takes an interesting turn when it is learnt that the accident was stage managed. In the end Lakha spills the beans..The play is all about man’s dogged spirit and his quest for triumph against what destiny has ordained.

A young litterateur indulges in flight of fancy and weaves a tale to suit commercial interest. He thinks that the world of reality has its limits; that of imagination is boundless. His aunt tells him that a writer is a visionary, committed to truth and doesn’t turn away from reality -and vision is the art of seeing things invisible. But if imagination translates into apparent reality, what will be the predicament of the writer? Does he have the gumption to reconcile to the transformation? This question has been examined in this play. 



2014 : Chokher Aloy (In the light of eyes)

In this cruel world penury is a curse. It is unpleasant and unwelcome,
but is the reality of life. Struggle for subsistence to make both ends meet is not easy. When one suffers from insecurity and his dreams of a better life lay shattered, he may find himself momentarily lost in a maze of greed, deceit and treachery. The moot point is whether basic human values and wisdom can prevail over such moral degradation.

Our brain has unlimited capacity, but only a fraction of it is used. Large part of the brain remains unexplored. It is said that an average man develops only ten percent of his latent mental ability. If only we apply ourselves to harnessthis unused potential, we could achieve so much more.

Love, affection, understanding are the traits of a happy family. But when there is trust deficit and the unsavoury past surfaces to haunt them, there is turmoil in the family-the emotional bond starts loosening. Can commitment to human values and a resolve to face adversity head-on, defying the norms of a conservative society, salvage the situation?

Our mind allows us to interpret what we perceive externally, yet there is so much left unexplained about the mind itself. When an individual’s very existence is at stake, a new identity is forged inside his sub-consciousness splitting his personality into two or more distinct parts, where one part becomes dominant egging him on to act with frighteningly unpredictable consequence.



2015 : Shubho Janmodin (Happy Birthday)

Dr. Sudhangshu Mukhopadhyay wants to celebrate his birthday in a grand manner. His brother pooh-poohs the idea. Instead, he suggests that all the neighbourhood animals – cats, dogs, goats, cows and birds – be invited to the party and fed to their heart’s content, making it a novel way of celebrating birthday.



2016 : Amitakshar (Unrhymed)

The play is all about the travails of an impoverished man, struggling to make ends meet, who, unwittingly drawn into quagmire of politics, makes one last-ditch attempt for redemption. In the complex urban socio-political milieu, where life is a constant struggle, is it justified to give in to the inherent greed in man, just for one’s subsistence? Leading a life of deceit day in and day out causes such a conflict that it can devastate the self-respect of a simple folk. The protagonist realizes this the hard way. He finds that he has bitten off more than he can chew.



2017 : Dabakhela (Game of Chess)

Playwright – Sudip Sarkar

Direction – Souvik Sen Gupta

The protagonist of the play is torn between his inner self and the stark reality of outside world. He represents life and human values. When death comes calling in the form of a person, he decides to challenge it. A fierce battle ensues in a game of chess. If he wins, it will be a victory of the values he fondly nurtured since childhood. If he loses, he will die a mental, not physical, death. Who will have the last laugh?

Interpersonal relationship in a family plays an important role in bonding or otherwise. In a close-knit family, sometimes there is tension on the surface. Not-so-pleasant exchanges, insinuations, arguments, fighting over trivial issues take place, but deep inside quietly flows the stream of love, affection, and respect, which binds the family together. A happy family lives in a home, not in a house, because a house is built by hands, but a home is built by heart.

This hilarious play, in the garb of comedy, exposes the decadence in our society, its double standard and moral bankruptcy. Very often we come across people, who indulge in skullduggery, lead a life of deceit and duplicity. They don’t practice what they preach. This subterfuge makes the audience to deeply introspect how to overcome this problem. Disreputable people rule the roost in our society and we are at their mercy. Is there any way out to redeem the society?

In a male-dominated society, women are considered frail, weak, inferior and hence subjugated by men since time immemorial. But if women find the right atmosphere for emancipation, to realize their potential, they become the epitome of courage, conviction and beauty and they can shake the male bastion.



2018 : Arundhati (The morning star)

Revenge is an act of passion; vengeance of justice.  So believes Arundhati for she cannot forget the grievous injury inflicted on her in the past, which has tormented her soul continually. She is on a mission now. But is it the be-all and end-all of her life? Will she remain fixated with endless cycle of resentment and retaliation?  Does the human qualities of compassion and forgiveness have no role to play? Can she not look beyond the immediate future and dream of a better life?



2018 : O-Bhoot (Unprecedented)

What happens when an ordinary folk assumes a larger-than-life image and takes on the powers that be? A gullible person, possessed by the ghost of an honest man, undergoes complete transformation overnight. He can see through the veils of people around him, masquerading as ‘respected’ in society, and starts unmasking them. All hell breaks loose. People are scared to confront the truth. Their reputation is at stake.  So, they come together and unite against their common enemy.



2019 : Ghar (Home)

Ghar or home is a refuge amid life’s storms and stresses, a happy place in which to dwell, where we are loved and can love. It’s only through love that we can ever truly feel at home. But the peace at home turns topsy-turvy when distrust and  suspicion take over…
