Souvik Sen Gupta

Souvik Sen Gupta is a Playwright, Director, Actor and skilled in designing music, light and stagecraft.

Born in 1959 in Kolkata, he is a graduate in Applied Art from Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta. He is a gifted creative person in Advertising & Communication. He has worked as Vice President, Creative Director with some of the most reputed and internationally famed ad agencies of the country. Apart from winning numerous awards from India and abroad for his creative excellence in communication, his works got special mention in books authored by some legendary names. Souvik has independently scripted, directed and produced many ad films and documentaries in his long career in advertising and communication. He has worked with some of the country’s best talents in film industry and advertising. He is presently working as a Communication Expert for behavioral change communication.

Besides excelling in fine and performing art like Music, Painting, Sculpture, Writing, Souvik was attracted to Theatre from an early age. He appeared on stage as child artist and regularly took part in school and college theatres.

Due to the demanding nature of his profession, he was unable to take active part in theatre for a long time before he joined Aakriti as one of the founder members in 2002. His love for and skill in theatre finally found expression in Aakriti.

His skill in creative writing, visualization, composing music and hands on knowledge of set making and light designing for film came in very handy in his new journey for theatre.

He has written nine short plays –  Sharomeyo Shangbad (a dog’s story) based on Chekov’s ‘The Chameleon’, Aansher Gandho (the smell of fish), Ekti Durghatana O  Ekti Atmahattya (an accident and a suicide), Kacher Manush (the man made of glass), Dwitiya Ishwar (the second God), Uthal Pathaal (the turmoil) based on ‘Vidyasagar’ written by Swapnamoy Chakrabarty, and Adhara (inaccessible) inspired by Buddhadeb Basu, Aparajito (the unbeatable), Baansh (bamboo), Dwikhandito (Halved) based on a story by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay.

Apart from receiving many awards for Acting, Music Direction, Stagecraft Design, he was adjudged Best Playwright  in  All India Competitions across the country for six times.

Souvik is fond of humor and believes in laughing at our false sense of vanity and hypocrisy. He is of the opinion that a change is possible in human beings if the motivation is right. Time and again he tries to convey this through his plays in simple narrative and interesting stories. Souvik loves novel ideas, interested in new view points and likes state-of-the-art technologies. He wholeheartedly believes that ‘rules are made to be broken.’
